Mayor & Council Member Seats

Regularly scheduled elections are held in odd-numbered years. Individuals seeking office for the Mayor or Council Member seat must meet the requirements of the Constitution of the State of Georgia, the Georgia Elections Code, City Charter, and the City Code of Ordinances. Local Qualifications

  • Be at least twenty-one years of age
  • Be registered and qualified to vote in the city election
  • Be a resident of the City of Gainesville, i.e., live inside the city limits, for at least twelve months prior to the date of the election
  • Be a resident of his/her ward for at least twelve months immediately prior to the date of the election and continue to reside in his/her ward throughout the four-year term

General Power & Authority of the City Council

Except as otherwise provided by law or the Charter, the governing body shall be vested with all the powers of the government of the City. In addition to all other powers conferred upon it by law, the governing body shall have the authority to adopt and provide for the execution of such ordinances, resolutions, rules, and regulations, not inconsistent with the Charter and the Constitution and the laws of the State of Georgia, which it shall deem necessary, expedient, or helpful for the following and may enforce such ordinances by imposing penalties for violations thereof:
